Workshops

Being Instruments of Peace
With Joan Weisenbeck, FSPA
Explore what it means to be an instrument of peace the Franciscan Way. This workshop will ponder the words and stories and actions of Francis of Assisi as he lived the principles of peace in his life. At the end of the workshop, we will be invited to make one personal step toward peace in our individual lives.
A Biblical Primer on Peace
With Rev. Mark Pierce
Perhaps no other word in our English language – save “love” – is more susceptible to sloganeering, and thus misunderstanding, than “peace.” This presentation will look beyond the rhetoric to the biblical roots of our reasons to have hope in God’s intentions about, and Christ’s Last Supper wish for, peace. Bringing your own Bible would be helpful.
Building Peace
With Carlene Unser, fspa and Laurice Heybl, FSPA
We will reflect on being peace with our hearts, minds and with our hands. In the light of the Hiroshima peace flame, we will prayerfully construct an origami peace crane. The Japanese legend says that anyone who folds and constructs 1,000 peace cranes will have their heart's desire come true. The paper crane has become a symbol of peace because of this legend and the desire for peace of a young girl, Sadako Sasaki, a Hiroshima survivor who eventually died of leukemia.
Finding Inner Peace by Tapping into the “Divine Matrix “
With Judy Aufenthie
Within the “Divine Matrix” is all the wisdom and knowledge we need. Tapping into that information is the key to finding inner peace. This interactive session will provide participants with some techniques which will enable them to access inner resources through grounding, movement, accessing the energy centers and cellular memories which create an environment for allowing the information to be revealed.
If I Could Change Two Things . . .
With Janet Mallak, SSND
Many are experiencing transitional times which influence the way they choose to live and be their best self. Where does our action for change come from? To explore this basic question, this workshop will include themes of: listening from our deepest self, attending to the inner voices of judgment, cynicism and fear, opening heart, mind and will, and stepping into the hope and authentic future we most desire.
The Inner Road to Peace: A Buddhist Witness
With Susan Nelson
Susan Nelson will speak about how her faith tradition helps her find peace within and extend peace out into the world.
The Inner Road to Peace: A Christian Witness
With Barb Kruse
Jesus practiced perfect nonviolence. As Christians we are called to make our life story fit into the life story of Jesus as we strive to model Christ's forgiving, compassionate and loving presence in the world today.
The Inner Road to Peace: A Muslim Witness
With Fawaz S. Alotwi and Daoud Jandal
Fawaz and Daoud will speak about how their faith tradition helps them find peace within and extend peace out into the world.
A Pathway to Peace: Universal Spirituality
With Vince Hatt
Rather than fight about the differences among the world’s great religious traditions, we will follow Wayne Teasdale’s The Mystic Heart to name what is at the mystical core of all of them. We will discuss the power of universal spirituality and its eight practical elements.
Reaching Out in Peace – St. Francis and the Sultan
With Laura Nettles, FSPA
One of the great stories of peacemaking is Francis' journey to speak with the Sultan of Egypt. He sought a way toward peace and understanding through dialogue with Malik-al-Kamil. In this session we will examine the historical experience of St. Francis and the Sultan. Participants will be moved to an exploration of our contemporary call to be people of peace and reconciliation to the world.
A Sanctuary of Peace: Creating Your Personal Altar
With Kim Hammer
Personal altars have been used for centuries, across all religious and spiritual traditions, to demonstrate love and devotion, to set an intention, and as a focal point of beauty. They connect our heart with what is larger than ourselves and invite us to pause in the midst of our busy lives. You can honor what is sacred and true for you. Learn how you can create and care for sacred space inside your home and on the earth.
War and Peace (The Inside Story/The Outside Story)
With Bob Schneyer
We’ll explore together these two powerful themes as they play out in each of us as individuals and between us. We’ll add touches of music and drama to bring further meaning.
